Are you a fat burning beginner?

Fat loss supplements are the best way to a fast track six pack. In this article we will run through the myriad of types of fat loss supplements available today. Let’s get to the bottom of what they actually do…

Thermogenic fat burners

Thermogenic or ‘T5’ fat burner supplements work by boosting metabolism and increasing the number of calories burned through the day.

Most thermogenic fat burners contain the following ingredients:

  • Green Tea Extract contains catechins (antioxidants) which increase metabolism through specific enzyme inhibition.
  • Synephrine has a chemical structure similar to ephedrine. It is the fat burning component of ingredients like bitter orange peel and raspberry ketones.
  • Sida Cordifolia contains ephedrine alkaloids which are infamous in their ability to strip fat.
  • Capsaicin, a spicy chemical found in pepper such as Guarana. It increases metabolism through augmenting levels of norepinephrine.
  • Advice: Thermogenic ingredients are not for everyone. The way they burn fat leads to stimulatory effects such as increased heart rate. If you are thinking of using thermogenic fat burners, start at low dosages to gauge your individual tolerance.

    Lipolysis enhancers

Lipolysis enhancers reduce fat by boosting the natural process of lipolysis. This is usually achieved by stimulating the movement of fat cells from adipose tissue or preventing fat storage.

    Lipolysis enhancers contain:

  • Caffeine, a very common ingredient which works by increasing the release of fat stores into circulation.
  • Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), which inhibits the fat storing enzyme lipoprotein lipase (LPL) thereby reducing the storage of fat and increasing the amount available to be used as fuel.
  • N-Acetyl-L-Carnitine, which improves the body’s ability to use fat as an energy source.
  • Advice: Aside from caffeine, lipolysis enhancing supplements don’t really have any stimulatory effects. If you combine lipolysis enhancing supplements with frequent, prolonged ‘submaximal’ exercise (eg. treadmill running for 45 minutes+) this could be a potent fat loss combination.

    Antioxidant hormone regulators

These are natural fat loss supplements usually work through the regulation of the hormone insulin. They are often found in extracts from fruits and other foods (sometimes called ‘superfoods’). By preventing spikes in insulin levels, these supplements reduce excess fat storage.

    Most antioxidant hormone regulators include:

  • Irvingia Gabonensis, an ingredient which increases the body’s sensitivity to the ‘ab fat’ burning hormone leptin.
  • Alpha-lipoic acid, an antioxidant which increases the body’s sensitivity to insulin. This helps to direct fat into the muscle to be used as energy instead of being stored as fat.
  • Anthocyanins, which works by eradicating the ‘free-radical’ by-products of metabolism. This results in the blunting of insulin spikes and stabilises blood sugar levels.
  • Advice: When used correctly, natural superfoods can be extremely effective. They also have the added benefit of improving your general wellbeing.

    Our take

Fat loss supplements often combine thermogenic and lipolysis enhancing ingredients in one product. This combination work together synergistically to help you achieve your weight loss goals quickly. However, people are beginning to see results from natural antioxidant supplements. Try to include these in your weight loss strategy wherever possible.
