Tribulus is a testosterone boosting supplement that comes from a flower.

Also known as cat’s head and devil’s weed, Tribulus Terrestris, is found all over the world, from southern Europe to the Australian outback. The extract is thought to increase the body’s natural testosterone levels and thereby improve male sexual performance and help build muscle.

It became particularly popular in the early 1970s, when American IFBB bodybuilding champion Jeffrey Petermann publicly backed it. It resurfaced again in the mid 90s when it became known as the “secret weapon” of Eastern European athletes who credited it for their astounding performances at the Olympic Games.

Sounds pretty good. But the question is: does it really work?

Proposed Benefits of Tribulus

You can expect the following benefits when taking Tribulus:

  • Naturally boost testosterone levels
  • Increase muscle mass development
  • Enhance recovery from intense exercise
  • Improve libido and sexual function
The theory as to why Tribulus supplements elicit these improvements is due to Tribulus’ ability to stimulate the production of Luteinizing Hormone. This initiates a chain of events which ultimately leads to increased levels of circulating testosterone, and it’s this important anabolic hormone which may regulate these impressive benefits.

    How to Use Tribulus

Consumption of Tribulus does not have a specific time window; however users are advised not to consume more than 750mg of Bulgarian Tribulus in 24 hours.

    Are There Any Side Effects?

Tribulus supplements are generally classed as safe and have been used safely in numerous studies lasting up to 8 weeks, however long term use must still be classed as unknown. Individuals who are pregnant, have prostate issues or are due to undergo surgery are advised not to use Tribulus.

    Will Tribulus Work?

The scientific evaluation of Tribulus Terrestris is still in its infancy but some studies do show promising signs of enhanced testosterone circulation after using this supplement, and there are countless anecdotal reports of Tribulus accelerating gains in muscle mass and improving recovery time after strenuous exercise. Time will tell as to whether Tribulus gains substantial scientific backing or remains popular through ‘word of mouth’ recommendations.
